The Pressure of Politics

So Obama’s campaign seems to be caught in a moment of hypocrisy. The candidate, who message is to unite Americans and transcend racial and ethnic differences took a hard hit when two women who were wearing hijab were barred from sitting near the front because some campaign volunteers didn’t want his picture taken with muslims.

Articles on the happening.

From Politico

The ensuing apology

What does this bit of mea culpa say about the campaign, or is it just an honest mistake by some overzealous campaign volunteers?

  • I am sure it was one of his overzealous handlers, but still I think his campaign is over-reacting in trying to “defend” him from the claims that he is a Muslim. Their strategy might alienate Muslim Obama supporters. For instance, one of the smears in his Fight the Smears website (http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/fightthesmearshome/) is “Obama is a Muslim”. While calling a person a Muslim might tarnish his reputation among closed-minded people, a political campaign should not cater to bigots while insulting the millions of Muslims in America.
